Topping Out of Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center and Signing Ceremony of Proton Therapy Training Collaboration MOU

On December 18, 2018, Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center celebrated building core structure topping out at the project construction site in Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City. On the same day, a memorandum of understanding was entered into by Concord Medical Services Holdings Limited and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to collaborate in developing a proton therapy training program suitable for Chinese radiation oncology professionals. This milestone event was joined by representatives from Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, Guangzhou Development District Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Development and Construction Office, U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Shanghai Construction No. 4 Group, China International Capital Corporation Limited, Varian Medical Systems, Swiss Medical International, Concord Medical Services Holdings Limited.



Being Concord Medical's flagship project, Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center is a tertiary comprehensive cancer care institution with core specialty in proton therapy that is co-developed with Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center and designed and built under the guidance of MD Anderson Cancer Center. One of the key features of the Center is the introduction and application of proton therapy, a cutting-edge technology in radiation therapy, to patients in China.

Focusing on Comprehensive Cancer Care

Being one of Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City's core healthcare projects, Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center lies at the heart of Pearl River Delta region and aims to primarily serve patients of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and nearby provinces of Southern China, while at the same time, radiating over to the whole of China, East Asia and Southeast Asia. The Center builds on a land area of 50 acres with a total construction area of 100,000 sq. m., and has a planned bed count of 400. Construction is to be completed in two phases, with phase one started last February 2017 and is projected to open doors by 2020.     

Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center's service positioning spans from clinical care, prevention, research, training, and telemedicine. Guangzhou Concord is a comprehensive cancer care institution offering surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology care. The Center also houses a state-of-the-art radiation oncology center equipped with Varian's ProBeam Proton Therapy System and high-end LINACs. The surgical oncology department is equipped with da Vinci Surgical System. Guangzhou Concord aims to provide Chinese patients with advanced and patient-centric cancer care.


Forging Strong Partnerships to Create New Frontiers in Cancer Care

Since project inception in 2010, Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center has teamed with Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center to develop China’s leading proton therapy center and innovatively create clinical and research shared platform. This strong alliance enables Guangzhou Concord to share on Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center's expertise in patient care, clinical discipline development, talent education, and hospital operations and management; and to create a friendly doctor multi-practice environment for the achievement of collaborative success.



Beginning in 2015, Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center has collaborated with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for the planning and development of the cancer center project. The aim is to build and operate a comprehensive cancer center that meets MD Anderson's quality, safety and patient service standards.

On the occasion of Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center's core structure topping out, Concord Medical Services Holdings Limited and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center signed Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on developing a proton therapy training program catering to radiation oncologists, medical physicists and therapists of China.
